Yellow fever is a disease that attacks the kidneys and liver causing jaundice, thereby causing jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and eyes) therefore the name Yellow Fever. It is spread primarily by mosquitos. Holly Springs had survived Civil War and Reconstruction, but months after in 1878, the Yellow Fever Epidemic killed over 300 citizens and the town was on the brink of extinction. The Yellow Fever Martyrs Church and Museum is the only Yellow Fever museum in the country. It helps tells the story about a piece of history when people of Holly Springs suffered a catastrophe, lost over half it’s population due to the fever and people fleeing.
